Call Patterns within Cell Site Analysis

Cell site analysis is routinely used in criminal investigations in order to show the approximate location of a mobile phone at a particular time.

As well as using cell site analysis to show that a mobile phone was in the vicinity of a crime scene at a given time, it could also be used by the defence in support of an alibi to show that the mobile phone in question was actually nowhere near the scene of the crime. In both of these scenarios then attribution of the phone would need to be established prior to any cell site analysis work being conducted.

As well as using cell site analysis to show locations at which the phone was used, call pattern analysis can also be undertaken as part of a cell site analysis report. To analyse a large amount of call data can be very complex and lengthy, so a number of companies will use call data analysis software. This means that when conducting cell site analysis or call pattern analysis then this would allow for a fast interpretation of the results.

Once the call data has been simplified and standardised then cell site analysis or call pattern analysis can then take place.

Call pattern analysis will highlight mobile phone use between suspects which will then show how they use their mobile phones in general. This technique, which is often undertaken within a cell site analysis report, will show telephone numbers called as well as how often, and who the most frequent calls and texts are between.

It is often shown during cell site analysis evidence that a particular set of circumstance exist in relation to both location and call pattern. This can be looked at over an extended period of time by the defence team to show that the findings in relation to the cell site analysis are not out of the ordinary and do in fact support the alibi.
