Miscarriages of Justice Event & Cell Site Analysis
The cell site experts from Footprint Investigations were delighted to be invited to speak at an event this week. Cell site analysis evidence is pivotal in a case currently being reviewed by the centre.
The event was held at The University of Sheffield Miscarriages of Justice Review Centre.
The event was to both raise awareness of miscarriages of justice and to celebrate the fantastic work being carried out by the students, under the supervision of Professor Claire McGourlay and Dr Andrew Green, at the Miscarriages of Justice Review Centre.
Cell Site Analysis Expert and Technical Director, Greg Robinson conducted the presentation supported by Footprint Investigations Commercial Director Andy Townsend.
The talk started by looking at the inception of the mobile phone, where the attendees were shown some first generation 1G mobile phones. Finishing by being brought right up to date with 4G technology and how this impacts cell site analysis evidence.
Numerous case studies were presented to promote awareness of how to spot evidential weakness in the cell site evidence served by the prosecution. We see errors in prosecution work every day as much work is conducted by police analysts or mobile phone analysts rather than by expert companies as was previously the case. Neither are qualified to give expert opinion in relation to cell site evidence. Errors can also occur when a cell site expert has produced the evidence. Mistakes can be made by the prosecution, such as in the ‘phone hacking’ News International case, so this type of highly complex evidence always needs to be checked for accuracy and peer reviewed by another expert.
