An Introduction to Cell Site Analysis in Criminal Trials

Cell Site Analysis has been historically used for serious crime investigations and their subsequent court trials.  In the late 1990’s, prosecution cases were supported by the analysis of mobile telecommunication traffic data, but this was restricted at that time to the most serious of trials.  Significant events such as the Omagh bombing (August 1998) included cell site analysis evidence that implicated two offenders being present at the scene of the crime as well as other terrorist activity two weeks earlier.

Cell Site Analysis at Forensics Europe Expo 2013

Footprint Investigations attended the digital forensics conference at Olympia, London yesterday to speak about Cell Site Analysis on day 2 of the Forensics Europe Expo 2013.

The morning consisted of some very interesting presentations discussing the challenges of Law Enforcement Agencies when using mobile phones and cell site analysis as evidence, and case studies were shown by Police Scotland Major Incident Team, as well as Merseyside Police Matrix Team.

The importance of mobile Phone attribution

Frequently a quote will be heard suggesting that Cell Site Analysis will place an individual at a specific location, area or vicinity.  Of course, such inappropriate comments are usually addressed immediately and correcting the statement so to reflect it is the mobile phone (SIM card) that is located and not an individual.
